23 “Day care centres for every eventuality”

Guest child care in the day care centres run by the

‘Vereinigung’

23 day care centres run by the ‘Vereinigung’ in all parts of the city offer not only ‘normal’ child care, but also short-term guest child care (Gastkinderbetreuung), i.e. restricted to one or two days. This is a service for children who are looked after not in one of the Vereinigung's day care centres, but are instead cared for by, for example, their grandparents or a child minder. The guest child care then helps out on days when the normal care cannot be provided.

What does guest child care offer?

Many working parents are familiar with the situation: during the day the child is usually in safe hands with his/her grandparents or child minder. But now and again something crops up. The carer falls ill, has to travel somewhere or is impeded in some other way. Sometimes the news comes at very short notice and parents have only a day or even an hour to rearrange their child’s care. That often leads to stress. Can I take a day off at short notice, despite the time pressure at work? Who could I ask to look after the child? And how is the child likely to cope with this emergency situation? The purpose of guest child care is to ensure that situations like that can be dealt with in a more relaxed way for parents and children.

Welcome to playing and learning at the day care centre

The children can be admitted to a day care centre for short periods – e.g. one or two days. They are welcomed lovingly and looked after and guided through the day by trained educators. In the day care centre they participate alongside the other children in the diverse range of playing, learning and movement activities. Stimulating room designs and outdoor play areas await them at the day care centres. They will receive a fully adequate midday meal prepared on the premises, drinks and – depending on the duration of the care – small snacks between meals.

Our day care centres look after children of all ages, from babies to twelve year-old schoolchildren. There is no minimum age for guest child care – if you have a small child, you as a parent are the best person to judge what the best solution is for that child.

“From one day to the next” or even on the same day:

How to register

You can register your child at short notice – on the day before or even, in emergencies, on the morning of the day of admission. At all events, you must contact the day care centre by telephone before taking your child there.

You will fill out a short form at the day care centre when you take your child there. You can also download it here as a pdf file:

For safety reasons, we need a telephone number where you (or another person familiar with your child) can be reached throughout the day. Please also remember to inform us about any allergies suffered by your child or any other special factors that we must observe while caring for him/her. We are unfortunately unable to admit children who are ill.

If you already know in advance that you are going to require guest child care occasionally, we recommend that you and your child visit the day care centre in advance so that your child will then be coming into a familiar environment. Please arrange an appointment for the visit with the management of the day care centre.

All year from 6.00 to 18.00 hrs …

The guest children can be looked after for the duration of the day care centres’ opening hours. Generally these are 6.00 to 18.00 from Mondays to Thursdays and 6.00 to 17.00 on Fridays. Our day care centres are open throughout the year, i.e. also during the summer holidays – except for a few isolated days when they are closed.

What does guest child care cost?

The care is booked for at least 5 hours per day in return for a basic price. For each additional hour begun, an hourly rate is charged. If more than one sibling is being cared for, there are discounts for the second and third child.

Please see the following table for the prices of guest child care. The cost of the midday meal, drinks and snacks are included in the prices.

A few more tips …

The guest child care is intended as a solution for individual days. Of course we will also be glad to care for your child over longer periods. Guest child care is not ideal for this purpose, however. The care over longer periods is being offered by all day care centres of the 'Vereinigung' - if the booking-situation allows it in the Kita you have chosen. If you need child care for a lengthy period because of your work, you are usually entitled to claim a publicly subsidised day care centre voucher (Kita-Gutschein) from the competent Youth Welfare Office. All of the information on this subject can be found under the heading Bewilligung und Kosten (Approval and Costs). If your child is already attending a day care centre that does not belong to the 'Vereinigung' and you would like to bridge over its summer closure period with one of our day care centres, you should sign a private care contract for the period because it will cost you less. You will find information on this subject under the heading Privately financed care or obtain it from the management of any of the Vereinigung's day care centres.
